St Peter’s College has served the people of Dunboyne for twenty years, having opened its doors in August 1994 with a first cohort of 75 pupils. Its enrolment is currently 1101 and is set to continue to rise in the next few years. There were four building phases since those early days in the old village primary school, and the school now boasts a large well-equipped campus, with plans for a further extension nearing completion.
Our school crest contains these three words which encapsulate the spirit of St Peter’s College:
- Dóchas: Hope in our future
- Dúchas: Faithfulness to our collective heritage and culture.
- Díocas: Diligence and commitment.
St Peter’s College is a co-educational school under the joint trusteeship of LMETB and the Diocese of Meath. Our mission is to promote excellence in a caring, supportive environment, providing the highest standard of education for all the young people in our community. Respect among all members of the school community and high expectations for students and staff are core values in St Peter’s College. Our strong links with the local community include shared use of the Community Centre and its astro-turf pitch and the use of the school pitch and changing rooms by the Dunboyne Ladies GAA club.
Despite the large population, one of the defining characteristics of the school is the strong personal relationships that exist between the members of the school community. Visitors to St Peter’s College invariably comment on the warm, friendly atmosphere that greets them when they come through our doors. They are also struck by the dramatic displays of student art work that add colour and vibrancy to the corridors.
Sporting and cultural activities feature strongly in our extra-curricular profile. An outstanding musical tradition has been developed in the school, with a top-class musical every year, several choirs and a thriving orchestra. St. Peter’s College students also take part in English and Irish inter-schools debates and send teams to equestrian events. On the playing field, our teams have competed successfully at Leinster and All-Ireland level in a range of sports including Gaelic football, soccer, athletics and basketball.
St Peter’s College confidently threw its doors open to the world at large when it participated in the land-mark documentary, The School, which was broadcast on RTE in 2009. In December of this year we will be launching a record of the first twenty years of the school’s history in a book entitled: St Peter’s College, A Miscellany of Memories. Through that publication and the other events that have marked our anniversary year, we hope to cement our links with a memorable past and move forward ambitiously and confidently into an even brighter future.
